Alsace
The cultivation of vines in Alsace dates back to Roman times. Colmar is the nerve center of the Alsatian vineyard.
There is great diversity in the nature of the rocks and soils, which helps to establish the impressive richness of the terroirs and the typicality of Alsatian wines.
Contrary to the customs of other French vineyards, it is generally not their terroir that gives their name to the wines of Alsace, but their grape variety.
There are 8 white grape varieties, and only one is authorized in red: Pinot Noir.
